History

The Wool Road Spinners and Weavers group was formed in October 1979 by a few enthusiasts who held their first meetings in a private home. Since that date the group has grown from the few original members to well over 30, with regular meetings at the St Georges Basin Community Centre.
Now the group meets at the Lady Denman in Vincentia.

The group derives its name from the fact that the 'Old Wool Road' from Goulburn to Huskisson ran through the area of the groups origins, which is now Sanctuary Point.

The Wool Road was built in 1804-41 by Dr Beardwood Wilson and Lt Col Robert Stewart McKenzie with convict labour. The purpose of the road was to convey the highland wool clip to Huskisson by bullock wagons. From there it went to Port Jackson, thence to England by sea.

Although development has fragmented the Old Wool Road, parts of it are still to be found on the map of the area from basin view to Vincentia.
